MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The speaker of Somalia’s Upper House of Parliament, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi has turned down an establishment of an electoral commission to oversee the selection of members of parliament from the northern breakaway region of Somaliland.
A statement from his office on Sunday reiterated that the federal government has no right the manage the election of representatives from Somaliland.
“The government does not have the right to appoint a committee for Somaliland as it does not appoint committee members from the federal member states,” said Hashi.
The speaker further said the move by the Somali federal government will jeopardize the free and fair electoral process.
Abdi Hashi, however, recommended the 2016 election procedure in order to avoid political stalemate ahead of the crucial elections slated next month saying it best suits the selection of members of both upper and lower houses of parliament from the breakaway region that is yet to be recognized by the international community.
The leadership of the federal government and that of the regional member states have agreed to form a joint team to spearhead the management of the upcoming parliamentary elections in December.
