ISKUSHUBAN (Halbeeg News) – Puntland state authorities have confirmed that warplanes targeted bases of al-Shabaab and ISIS in northeastern Somalia.
Security officials who spoke to the local media said suspected US drones hit six bases belonging to the groups.
According to the officials, the planes fired missiles that hit four bases belonging to ISIS and al-Shabaab in Iskushuban district of Bari region.
The official said the aerial bombardment killed several fighters from both sides.
The attacks took place in Shidi-Aymayra village and other remote areas.
Local residents who spoke to VOA Somalia said that they heard heavy bombardment in the remote areas.
Neither Somali government nor U.S. military which had been targeting the groups talked about the strikes.
The U.S. has increased airstrikes against the groups’ fighters and their bases.
Somali special forces backed by US troops have also intensified planned operations against the targets of the armed al-Shabaab in the south of the country.
Al-Shabaab group which lost the control of Mogadishu in 2011 has been carrying attacks against Somali forces and their allied African troops.
Despite losing many towns to Somali military-backed AMISOM troops, the group still controls several towns in South and central Somalia.
