The United States of America welcomed the peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea barely two days after Eritrea announced to dispatch a delegation to Ethiopia’s capital, ddis Ababa for a “constructive engagement with Ethiopia.”
Issuing a press statement, the press secretary said they are impress the development Ethiopia and Eritrea made to resolve the conflicts and regulate the relations.
“The united state is encouraged by the progress that Ethiopia and Eritrea have made to resolve long lasting disputes and normalize relations. Over the past 20 years, the frozen conflict between two these states has hindered stability and economic growth in the vital Red sea region.” The statement reads apart.
The statement also adds “A durable peace will yield greater prosperity and security not only for citizens of Ethiopia and Eritrea, but also for their neighbours, the United states, and the world”
The statement also praised the commitment and decision of PM Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea to make positive political changes in the region adding that their judgment will advance peace and stability.
“United states commends Ethiopia’s statement on June 5,2018 announcing that Ethiopia fully accepts the 2000 Algiers agreement, issued in the context of positive political and economic reforms. The United States also welcomes the Eritrean president’s Isaias Afwerki’s June20, 2018 to send a delegation to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to advance peace process. Prime minister Abiy Ahmed and Asaias Afwerki have demonstrated courageous leadership by taking these steps towards peace”
Last Wednesday, President Isaias Afwerki said his country will send off delegation to Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa for a “constructive engagement with Ethiopia.”
Speaking at a Martyrs’ Day event in the capital, Asmara, Afwerki expressed hopes of a breakthrough in one of Africa’s most intractable conflicts.
“We will send a delegation to Addis Ababa to gauge current developments directly and in depth and to chart out a plan for continuous future action,” he said.
He described recent peace overtures from arch-enemy Ethiopia as “positive signals”.
“The events and developments that have unfolded in our region in general and in Ethiopia in particular in the recent period warrant appropriate attention,” the president of Eritrea said.
In April this year, Ethiopia extended a hand of peace after 18 years hiatus in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
