NAIROBI (Halbeeg) – The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) 341 individuals from Dadaab refugee camp in northeast Kenya were assisted in the framework of voluntary return to Somalia.
The refugee agency said road convoys which had been temporarily suspended due to insecurity and heavy rains initially has officially resumed.
The UN refugee agency said the first road convoy since March has set off to Somalia on Tuesday.
“341 Somali Refugees voluntarily returned from #Dadaab, Kenya; first road convoy since March 2018.,” UNHCR said, “UNHCR Somali Government and partners provided assistance at Dhobley border waystation in Somalia.”
The agency said that some 81,111 returnees have so far been supported from Dadaab camp under the framework of voluntary repatriation since the beginning of the process three years ago.
“Since 2014, UNHCR has supported 81,111 Somali refugees returning from Kenya,” the agency said.
An estimated two million Somalis have been displaced in one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises that have now entered its third decade.
The East African nation, which has been planning to close the Dadaab refugee camp, has cited the influence of Al-Shabaab as among the risks of keeping the camps open.
