MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – United Nations (UN) and United States (US) have joined Somalia leaders in mourning the death of renowned Somali medical doctor, philanthropist and humanitarian Hawa Abdi.
Abdi who had been helping thousands of poor Somali families for decades died on Wednesday after short illness, according to her family.
She turned her backyard into a health clinic targeting the internally displaced in Somalia.
In 2012, Dr Abdi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
In Twitter post, UN said it joined all Somalis in mourning the sad loss of Dr. Hawa Abdi,
“The country’s first female gynaecologist and an internationally-recognized humanitarian, always putting her people’s needs first – our deepest condolences to her family and @AbdiFoundation,” the twitter reads in part.
In a separate statement, US extended condolences on the passing of Dr. Mama Hawa Abdi.
“She will be remembered for her selfless service to the people of #Somalia. We honor her legacy and mourn her loss with the family, friends and Somalia,” US embassy in Mogadishu said.
Hawa born in Mogadishu in 1947 to a scholar family. After her mother died, Hawa who was eldest in her family took the role bring up her siblings.
She completed her primary and secondary education in Mogadishu before she pursued further education to Russia after she received a scholarship from the Women’s Committee of the Soviet Union 1964.
Before her Journey to Moscow, Hawa was married but her short-lived planned marriage ended several years later.
Later on, while in Kieve, she met her future husband, Adan Mohamed who also a fellow student.
The couple had three children, two girls and a boy.
