MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on Sunday called on Somalia’s stakeholders to iron out the differences, saying the political tensions would jeopardise the gains made in the country.
Speaking during a visit to Mogadishu, Somali urged the leaders to de-escalate the political tension in the country amid the rift between Somali president, Mohamed Hussein Roble.
“I was encouraged to hear the commitment from all I met with to ensure that this momentum is sustained and that critical elections move forward as scheduled,” said the UN official who also met President Mohamed Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Roble.
“I have confidence in Somalia’s leadership to de-escalate any tensions and avoid action that could lead to violence and further delay the elections or undermine its credibility,” she said.
The deputy secretary-general while in Somalia also met with President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo. She also met with members of the National Consultative Council (NCC), whose membership includes the leaders of the country’s federal member states and which is charged with providing the overall direction for the elections.
When asked about the case of Ikran Tahlil Farah, a member of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) who has been missing since June 26 this year, Mohammed said the rule of law and access to justice are critical to protection from violence and are the right of all women.
