MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – United Nations will probe the cause of expulsion of its envoy to Somalia and concerns of the Somali government.
Somali government on Wednesday declared UN Special representative for Somalia Nicholas Haysom persona non granta, accusing him of “violating protocols” and “deliberately interfering” in the internal affairs of the Horn of Africa country.
Speaking to the media, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said the United Nations is looking into the expulsion of UN Special Representative for Somalia Nicholas Haysom from Mogadishu.
“We are looking into the matter, we are trying to get the various details corroborated, and we are going to see based on that what further steps are needed,” Haq told reporters.
Haq also confirmed that UN will address concerns of the Somali government and resolve the difference.
The decision by Somali government came after the UN envoy asked clarification from the government on whether UN-supported forces were involved in the shooting of demonstrators in the southern city of Baidoa last month.
In his letter, Haysom demanded answers from the government about the legal basis for arresting former Al-Shabaab deputy leader Mukhtar Robow.
Robow’s arrest sparked clashes between Robow’s supporters and Somali security forces on Dec. 13-15, resulting in the death of more than 5 people.
