NEW YORK (Halbeeg News) – The number of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) will be a drawdown, United Nations Security Council confirmed Friday.
The Council has voted unanimously to reduce 1000 troops from the forces operating under Mission.
Resolution 2472, unanimously adopted by the 15-member Security Council, decided to reduce the level of uninformed AMISOM personnel by to a maximum level of 19,626 by Feb. 28, 2020, in line with the Transition Plan.
The mission will maintain 1,040 police.
The force’s mandate was extended for a year.
The council also decided that AMISOM shall be authorized to take all necessary measures, in full compliance with participating states’ obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law, in full respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity of Somalia, to carry out its mandate
Under a transition plan agreed in 2017, Amisom will gradually hand over security to Somali forces, but the African Union has raised a concern about the extra responsibility as the country heads to elections next year.
AMISOM troops were deployed in Somalia in 2007 to help Somali government in the process to stabilise the country.
The forces from the mission with help of Somali army succeeded to drove al-Shabaab fighters from the Somali capital Mogadishu following days heavy street gun battle in the city.
