MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)-The United Nations and Somali Interior Ministry have this morning jointly launch a Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.
The PBF projects which worth $ 30 million aims to support the country’s peacebuilding efforts.
According to the statement, the ministry with its international partners launched five new projects supported by the UN fund.
During his opening speech of the event, the interior minister said that his ministry had made significant progress. The government intends to apply for the next round once the current expires at the end of the year.
“The range of the projects we are launching today reflects the inter-linked nature of the issues they will address. We must support the community reconciliation to improve the local governance,” the minister said.
“Equally, we must support those displaced by conflict to find durable solutions as well as those who put down arms and reject conflict. Collectively those projects supported by the UN Peacebuilding Fund will allow us to address the challenges we face with coherent and consistent focused that will deliver tangible benefits to our citizens and in doing so, help bring peace and instability to Somalia.”
According to UN, the projects will also address Somalia’s peacebuilding priorities as outlined in the peacebuilding priority plan, the national development plan, the national stabilisation strategy, the Wadajir Framework, and the national reconciliation framework.
The UN Secretary-General’s PBF has supported Somalia’s peacebuilding process since 2009.
UN says that investments in Somalia’s peacebuilding to date amount to $45 million, of which a record level of $14 million was allocated to five new projects in 2018.
