MOGADISHU (Mogadishu) – United Nations has said 1.7 million people in Somalia will face food crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity until June.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday said a second consecutive failed rainy season in Somalia has led to livestock losses and widespread crop failure.
The official stated that malnutrition rates are rapidly escalating due to the drought conditions saying 954,000 children are anticipated to be acutely malnourished.
According to Dujarric, UN humanitarian country team is preparing a drought response plan to address food gaps in the most severely affected areas.
The team will prepare for substantial increases in needs between May and October
He said the current plan seeking $1.08 billion for Somalia is only 19% funded, which has led to the scaling back of water, sanitation and hygiene activities.
