MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – UN envoy to Somalia has expressed concern over upsurge in al-Shabaab attacks in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
Addressing UN Security Council, James Swan, the UN secretary-general’s special representative said there is need for “hard security” operations to counter the group in the wake of the 16 August assault on the Elite Hotel.
“We are now witnessing a worrying upsurge in Al Shabaab attacks, particularly in Mogadishu, but also in several regions. The vicious al-Shabaab attack on innocent civilians at the Elite Hotel on August 16 was one of an increasing number of recent attacks across Somalia,” he said.
He said tbe tragic is reminder of the continued imperative to improve security in Somalia.”
“Long-term security of course includes many aspects, such as improved governance and justice systems and inclusive economic development. Yet, there unquestionably also remains a requirement for “hard security” capabilities and operations to counter al-Shabaab,” the envoy told UN the security council.
The envoy attributed the increase attacks by al-Shabaab lull of operations by Somali forces saying the efforts have focused on stabilizing the recovered areas and consolidating presence in the area.
Swan said 2021 is to be a critical transition year in which Somalia takes the lead on its security matters.
