MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Foreign missions led by the UN in Somalia have welcomed Somali parliament’s decision to hold elections in the horn of Africa nation following months of heated political standoff.
Somali lower house members on Saturday voted to adopt 17th Sep agreement on electoral process after president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo request them to annul two-year term extension.
In a separate statements, Somalia’s partners have urged the country’s political stakeholders to return to the negotiating table to agree on the implementation of the deal.
“UN in Somalia welcomes decision of Fed Parliament to reinstate the 17 September electoral agreement following Farmaajo’s request: calls on Somali leaders to return to dialogue and prepare #elections without delay: welcomes lead role of Mohamed H Robleh on behalf of FGS,” UN office in Somalia said.
European Union Mission in Somalia has warned against any precondition which could lead another political crisis in the country.
‘The EU welcomes HoP decision and the announcement by President Farmajo. Now, no preconditions, no spoiling, no violence. PM Roble must count on the constructive support from all FMS presidents and other political actors for a Somali-led process,” EU envoy to Somalia, Nicolas Berlanga said in a Twitter post.
The members have annulled two year term extension for the government which was approved last month after the federal government and its member states failed to reach agreement on the implementation of 17th Sep election deal.
This follows Farmaajo’s speech on efforts to end the differences between the federal government and member states.
