MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – The heads of UN Peacebuilding assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco and UN mission in Somalia, James Swan meet members of the recently appointed UN Youth Advisory Board in Mogadishu.
Oscar Fernandez and James Swan stressed the key role of young people in peace and security, their political participation & empowerment, and other challenges during their meeting with the new advisory board.
They said youth engagement is vital to advancing peace and political progress in Somalia.
The United Nations Mission in Somalia office reiterated that it will continue to help young people develop initiatives to ensure their active participation in the country’s ongoing political processes.
Recently established the UN Youth Advisory Board will directly advise the United Nations on its policies and programs related to youth.
It consists of 12 members aged 15 to 35 years, who are involved with local youth and professional organizations.
Six were appointed by the regional youth umbrella organizations, and another six were identified through an open call based on their work towards one of the six thematic areas including employment & entrepreneurship, protection of rights and civic engagement, political inclusion, education & skills development, health, and peacebuilding.
The Board will have an advisory role, working closely with the UN Inter-Agency Working Group on Youth, to advise the UN senior leadership in Somalia and will contribute to increasing the level and quality of youth participation in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of UN policies and programs.
