MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – United Nations and International community have jointly expressed over newly tabled bill of sexual offence saying it was deeply flawed.
In a statement, UN said it shared the concern over the bill which allows child-marriage, with the Lower House speaker.
“UN and other partners in #Somalia have expressed concern to Parliament Speaker Mursal about attempts to table a deeply-flawed new bill that allows child marriage and contravenes relevant intl. conventions,” the statement reads in part.
The bill was previously approved by the cabinet before it was move to the parliament.
UN urged Cabinet to re-introduce the original Sexual Offences Bill.
Several other lawmakers from Somali parliament have also opposed the bill saying it violates the rights of women.
Maryan A. Harun, Secretary of Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Women said the bill did not go through our committee.
“We have had no input in this bill and we are not accepting this bill,” Maryan said.
Abdirisack Mohamed, Former Internal Security minister and current MP, has also opposed the bill saying those who drafted the bill should be held accountable.
“They should be held accountable and questioned on who was responsible on today’s theatrical saga, as the oversight committee denied of drafting the bill introduced today at the parliament,” he said.
