MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Four intergovernmental organisations have urged Somali political stakeholders to end their differences and hold inclusive elections in the country.
In a statement, UN, AU, EU and IGAD stated that the 17September agreement remains most viable path towards the holding of elections in the shortest delay possible.
“UN, AU, EU and IGAD call upon Somali political leaders to continue the progress made in state-building and inclusive politics.
They have expressed serious concern that the political stalemate is impacting negatively on peace, security, stability, and prosperity in Somalia and beyond.
The organizations warned against any parallel process saying they will not support partial elections and new initiatives leading to any extension of prior mandates.
The organizations reiterated their respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Somalia but warned the Somali leaders that they will support any extension of prior mandates.
Remarks of the organization come barely a day after Somali government affirmed its commitment to resolve the current political stalemate on the electoral process.
In a later addressed to UN Security Council, the horn of Africa nation expressed its readiness to implement the September 17 agreement and recommendations by the technical committees met in Baidoa town.
The federal government of Somalia considers the 17th September agreement as the base the electoral process and stands by the recommendations of the 16th February Baidoa Technical Committee without pre-conditions,” the letter reads in part. “In response to the concerns regarding electoral security, we would like to hereby affirm that the National Election Security Task led by the prime minister will be the mechanism through which all election-related security issues will be addressed.”
