GARISSA ( Halbeeg News) – Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled to lead an opening ceremony of a military airbase in Garissa, North Eastern, Kenya.
The President who will be accompanied by local politicians among them the leader of Majority, Aden Duale, Governor Ali Korane, and Senator Yusuf Haji will also plant a tree in memory of soldiers killed in the fight against terrorism apart from launching the Soldiers Legacy book which details the challenges and victories of the military.
According to military officials, the Modika Air Base will improve the security situation in north-eastern Kenya, going by the region’s proximity to Somalia and by extent the al Shabaab threat.
The insecurity in Somalia broke out in 1992 following the ousting of military man President Siad Barre which was followed by civil war.
Al-Shabaab has launched numerous waves of attacks against Kenya’s security agencies’ targets along with the border retaliation of KDF incursion inside Somalia in 2011.
Last week eight police officers, two teachers, and a doctor were among 11 people killed by gunmen in the Wajir bus attack.
