NEW YORK (Halbeeg News) – President Uhuru Kenyatta has held meeting with his Djibouti counterparts Ismail Omar Guelleh in New York town.
The meeting held on the sidelines of the ongoing 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York were convened by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt who is the current Chairman of the African Union.
During the meetings, the leaders discussed matters of mutual interest to the sister nations and the African continent as a whole.
President Kenyatta welcomed and thanked President El-Sisi for the meeting saying Kenya has always advocated for negotiations and will continue to push for dialogue in the spirit of maintaining cohesion of the African continent.
He reiterated that as a continent, Africa should always seek African solutions for African challenges.
Djibouti and Kenya are competing to secure non-permanent membership of Security Council.
The two countries went before African Union in Addis where members voted in favor of Kenya securing 51 votes of the 55 AU member states were present.
Despite its victory over Djibouti in AU, for Kenya to be a member of UNSC, it should win at least two-thirds votes of the UN member states when the election is held in New York next year in June.
Djibouti Permanent Representative to the UN and Ambassador to the US Mohamed Siad Doualeh has confirmed that his county will not quit the race for a non-permanent membership slot at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) despite the endorsement of Kenya’s candidature by AU.
