The President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta has affirmed his country will stand by Somalia despite the security challenges both are facing.
Sunday afternoon, IED suspected to have been laid by Al-Shabab massively damaged Kenyan military vehicle near Somalia’s border with Kenya. The blast killed 9 Kenyan Soldiers and wounded several others.
The soldiers of Platoon PTL of QRF convoy were returning to Dhobley through Dagalema route from Dadaab at the time of the attack, according to a statement by Kenya Defense Forces.
President Kenyatta said in a statement to the latest IED attack on KDF will deter Kenya’s mission to support Somalia’s peace restoration process.
“The mission they gave everything will continue until the evil terrorists of Al-Shabaab are defeated and the people of Somalia are safe once more. We owe victory to the fallen. You may be sure we will win, for we have right and might on our side,” he said.
He said he was saddened by the loss of the lives of the soldiers who gave their lives for the country.
“These men gave their lives for their country, and for peace; we must, and we will honour their service, their sacrifice and their valour,” Uhuru said.
Dhobley town is located at Somalia’s border with Kenya.
Kenya sent its troops in 2011 to fight Al-Shabab in Somalia after the group allegedly carried out abductions inside Kenya.
Al-Shabaab has taken responsibility for the roadside bomb attack that claimed nine Kenyan soldiers on the Kenya-Somalia border on Sunday.
The group claimed the attack that killed 15 soldiers, according to US extremism monitor SITE.
The group also published the claims in a statement shared through its media affiliate Radio Andalus.
