MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – The United States has welcomed the agreement reached between the Federal Government of Somalia and the leadership of Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a (ASWJ) on Thursday.
The agreement is based on resolving the difference between both sides on the upcoming regional elections and the number of regional assembly members for the ASWJ in Galmudug parliament.
A statement from the embassy in Mogadishu said the US is committed to supporting efforts while ensuring the implementation of peace and stability in the country.
“The United States applauds the hard work of negotiators to reach an inclusive agreement that ensures the long-term stability and prosperity of Galmudug state, an important front for our combined efforts in fighting al-Shabaab.”
U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Donald Y. Yamamoto recognized efforts and compromise made by all sides but call for timely implementation on the new accord.
“We recognize the previous statewide reconciliation efforts as well as the difficult compromise made by all of the stakeholders on the electoral model and parliamentary representation and encourage timely implementation of this agreement.”
Ambassador Yamamoto added that Galmudug remains in a critical region for the future development of Somalia and the U.S. Embassy remains committed to facilitating humanitarian aid, security assistance, and economic development for the people in the region.
