Five Al-Shabab fighters have been killed in a US drone attack near the town of Elbur in Somalia, US officials said on Monday.
In a statement by Africom, US military said the Sunday evening attack was made possible with help of the Federal Government of Somalia.
“In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Forces conducted an airstrike against Al-Shabab fighters near Elbur, Somalia, the afternoon of April 1, killing five (5) fighters and destroying one (1) vehicle,” reads the statement in part.
No civilians were killed during the attack.
The U.S. said they are ready to support and protect citizens across the world from this group.
“We will also target their training camps and their safe heavens not only in Somalia but across the region,” the U.S said.
Hassan Nur Gutale, Eel-bur district commissioner told Halbeeg News on Sunday that unidentified drones hit a car believed to be carrying senior members of the group near the town.
Missiles fired by drones struck one of the Al-Shabab vehicles near Eel-bur town.
Al-Shabab did not comment on the attack on its fighters.
