The US military announced Thursday it had killed 10 fighters in an airstrike against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
The attack took place on Wednesday in the outskirt of the Somali capital Mogadishu.
In a statement by Africom, U.S. military said the forces targeted the group in an area which lies 15 miles Southwest of the capital.
“In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Forces conducted an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants approximately 15 miles Southwest of Mogadishu, Somalia, on May 23, killing ten (10) terrorists,” the statement reads in part.
The mission said that there was no collateral damage.
“We currently assess no civilians were killed in this airstrike,” the mission affirmed.
Africom pledged that U.S. forces will continue to use all authorized and appropriate measures to protect U.S. citizens and to disable terrorist threats.
“This includes partnering with AMISOM and Somali National Security Forces (SNSF) in combined counterterrorism operations and targeting terrorists, their training camps, and their safe havens throughout Somalia and the region,” said the statement.
In Somalia, the U.S. military has executed 34 drone strikes from January to December 2017, which have reportedly killed 228 people.
