Mogadishu (Halbeeg)- The US government has congratulated Somali people on the occasion of Independence Day.
Millions of Somali Nationals in and outside the country are celebrating the 58 years of Independence.
Somalia’s southern regions attained independence on 1st July in 1960 and emerged with northern regions (Somaliland).
In a statement, U.S. President, Donald Trump extended congratulations on the Independence Day to Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I wish you and the people of Somalia a joyous 58th anniversary of independence,” Trump said in the statement, “The United States looks forward to continuing its partnership with the people and government of Somalia to work toward a brighter future. Working together to build a stable, peaceful, prosperous Somalia is in the interest of both of our nations. You will continue to have our support on this path.”
On the other hand, the Saudi Arabi King, Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Said and the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah sent congratulations to the Somali President and the nation.
The two leaders wished the president good health and happiness and the Somali people steady progress and prosperity.
Last night as the clock ticked midnight in Somalia, the blue flag with a five-pointed star was raised at the local government headquarters in Mogadishu with thousands of fireworks light up the sky over the seaside city.
The date also marks the union of two territories: the former Italian Somaliland or Southern Somalia and former British Somaliland or Northern Somalia; the two formed the present day the Somali Republic.
Northern regions of Somalia (now Somaliland) declared secession in1991 after Somalia’s central government was toppled.
The celebrations which on Sunday occurred in the Somali capital Mogadishu and other parts of the country have been observed in Hargeisa, the administrative capital of Somaliland.
