MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The United Nations Security Council will meet on Tuesday over Somalia’s current political gridlock.
According to sources who spoke AFP, today’s closed-door meeting will be held at the request of Britain, which is this month heading the Council.
According to its monthly program, London had initially scheduled a public Security Council session on Somalia on February 22, before a renewal of the African Union Amisom mission, which expires February 28.
The meeting comes a day after president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s term lapsed amid dispute over the electoral process.
On Monday, separate statements from UN, US and other foreign embassies in Mogadishu have called for immediate talks to end deadlock over the electoral process.
The called on the country’s stakeholders to urgently hold talks to avert the Horn of Africa nation from plunging into political uncertainty.
“We call upon Somalia’s leaders to resume their dialogue urgently to reach final agreement permitting national elections to take place as soon as possible,” the UN and more than ten foreign embassies and delegations in Somalia said.
