Kenya Police have arrested three Somali traders in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighbourhood following a crackdown on contraband goods.
The operations which took place in Section-III locality of Eastleigh seized over 2,000 bags of contraband sugar in a warehouse.
Police officials acting on tips off by the members of the Public, raided the warehouse.
The officials displayed bags of brown sugar packed in 50kg bags which were piled in the warehouse.
Mr. Musa Yego, the head of the Flying Squad Unit, said the bags of the sugar confiscates were imported from Brazil.
Yego pointed the traders have been selling the sugar which is not fit for direct human consumption, to unsuspecting members of the public.
“As you can see the sugar is branded not fit for direct human consumption but these traders have been repackaging it before selling the sugar to unsuspecting members of the public and shops around here,” said Mr. Yego.
He said that the forces also seized cans of cooking oil, also not fit for consumption.
The Flying Squad Unit boss said that three suspects, who have been operating the illegal business, will be arraigned in court soon.
“The contraband goods will be destroyed under the instruction of the court,” Mr. Yego said.
The move comes just five days after Kenya’s Weight and Measures department cooperating with police raided the godown in Mombasa where they intercepted over 1,000 bags of rice.
The officials also arrested two Somali men who were repackaging allegedly expired rice.
Kenya’s Weight and Measures national director Michael Onyancha said the two who are Somali, will be charged with trying to misinform consumers.
“What is happening here is illegal. We found these people repackaging the rice. The original bags said the rice was to expire in September 2017. They have now changed it to read September 2018,” he said.
