MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Two of Somalia’s main service providers have lost more than $2.5 million to vandalism, the report revealed.
According to a report issued by Somalia’s leading telecommunication companies Hormuud and Somtel, the companies the loss has largely been attributed to vandalism, from acts of Kenyan forces.
Kenyan military warplanes had been carrying attacks to destroy telecommunications masts in regions along Somalia’sborder with Kenya.
The report submitted to the Somali parliamentary Committee on Communication indicates losses suffered by the companies in the hands of the Kenyan military.
Hormud had incurred huge losses costing $1,983,881.
The forces destroyed Satellite dishes in Khadijo-Haji village near Bula Hawa town, telecommunication mast in Bardhere district, mast in Elbade town in Gedo, satellite dishes in Elwak, mast, and engine in Dhobley, and masts near Qoqani town.
According to the report, Somtel suffered loss adding up to $415,101.
The report says the continued destruction of the companies’ telecommunication masts in southern Somalia has slowed down its efforts to use a mobile platform to offer mobile money transfer and other services to the residents.
Telecom company called on the Federal Government of Somalia to stand against the vandalism of the company’s masts caused by Kenyan forces.
Kenyan anti-terror unit activities in the region have persisted in the towns in the last few months, according to residents.
