MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali national army (SNA) has confirmed that two al-Shabaab operatives had surrendered themselves to the army in central Somalia amid the government plans to intensify the operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south and central Somalia.
According to a statement by the country’s defense ministry, Hassan Hussein Ali, aka Mohamed-Deq and Derow Moalin Ibrahim “Idris” turned themselves in to the the government armed forces in Harerdhere town of Mudug region.
The development comes barely a week after Abdullahi Mohamed Nor, the director of the National Center for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism confirmed that 107 Al-Shabaab fighters surrendered to the government between July and August in four states: Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Southwest, and Jubaland.
“Those who surrendered include young children who were radicalised, youth, women, and group commanders, and they will be offered amnesty and then taken for rehabilitation,” the director said.
The Somali government under President Hassan Sheikh has issued an amnesty program for al-Shabaab fighters who have defected.
