The Office noted that the strong winds and flash flood killed livestock and destructed crops and property of immense value.
The office said the largest concentration of fatalities was reported in coastal Western and Awdal of Somaliland where the cyclone made landfall.
“The heavy rains and subsequent flooding are hindering humanitarians’ ability to access some of the areas affected by the cyclone to assess the extent of the damage and provide assistance,” said OCHA.
The agency pointed out the cyclone has worsened the humanitarian situation in Somaliland and Puntland states and disputed regions, which have experienced protracted drought dating back to 2015, leaving the areas particularly prone to flash flooding in the direct aftermath of massive downpours.
OCHA expressed concern over the situations of people in Sool and Sanaag where forces from Puntland and Somaliland are engaging in armed standoff.
“Due to the dispute over the regions of Sool and Sanaag and lack of access to some affected areas after the destruction of roads, the situation of affected populations and impediments caused by blocked roads and failed communications, the extent of the damage is yet to be fully confirmed,” OCHA said.
