Thousands of residents in Somalia’s northern region have been effected internet outrage and power blackout after Tropical Cyclone Sagar hit the area.
The cyclone which built up in Yemen’s Socotra Island has caused heavy rains in areas along Somalia’s coastal strip.
The local authorities in the region said the storm has uprooted the electricity poles and cut the wires off.
Residents say the strong winds snapped off trees and down power lines leading trail of destruction.
Heavy rains caused by the cyclone have destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of people in near Berbera town.
Strong winds also blew off roofs from buildings including schools and hospitals.
The UN Office for coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said over 1000 livestock have perished after heavy floods splashed in most the areas following torrential rains.
“Around 35 houses and 15 small boats were destroyed, while 56 camels, nearly 1,260 goats and sheep and 19 donkeys died. In the ancient coastal town of Lasqoray, houses in Habarshiro and Ceel Buh were also affected by flash flooding,” said the UN.
UN said Tropical Cyclone Sagar heavy rains that have been pounding the areas in the last two day.
“Villages have been inundated with heavy floods following heavy rains in Northern Somalia,” said OCHA in its Flush Update on Tropical Cyclone Sagar.
Sagar was named by UK Meteorological Office on Wednesday, after beginning life as a tropical depression (1A) in the Gulf of Aden.
The UN office adds the forecast appears to be as severe as the 2013 Somali Cyclone, but slightly below the severity of the 2008 Yemen Cyclone.
