The second day of a training programme on public awareness on constitution affairs is going on in Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of South west state.
Somalia ministry for Constitutional Affairs in cooperation with Southwest regional state is conducting a four-day training program for residents in Baidoa town on the Provisional Constitution.
The workshop which kicked off on Saturday began with two-day training of 50 trainers (TOT) who will cascade the training to the community level.
During the training, the workshop will focus on means to disseminate and enhance public awareness of the provisional Constitution.
Speaking at the opening of the training, Director General of Ministry for Constitutional Affairs, Mohamed Abukar Zubeyr said the training is meant to promote and make sure the role of civil society organizations in the constitutional review process of Somalia and discuss the challenges faced them to participate in the process.
“This Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop has been orchestrated to create medium to discuss the best ways to speed up the Constitutional Review Process by developing public awareness,” Zubeyr said, ” The process will the citizens to know their rights and responsibilities in accordance with the constitution.”
The ministry will dispatch the TOTs to training and educate the public on the role of the constitutional review process.
Representatives from Southwest ministry for constitutional Affairs, experts, elders are also attending the training.
Last Month, the country launched a three-day National Consultation Conference on the constitution in Mogadishu.
The convention was attended by over 350 representatives from the Federal Government, Federal Member States, civil society, and Somali Diaspora, International representatives and ambassadors.
Participants at the convention discussed the next steps of the review process and examined issues such as the sharing of powers and resources between the Federal Government and the Federal Member States.
It is aimed that the constitutional review process will lead to a permanent constitution of Somalia, to replace a provisional constitution adopted in 2012.
The new constitution is expected to be ready in 2019 before the country holds a ‘one-person, one-vote election’ in 2020.
