Las Anod (Halbeeg)At least three have been killed and six others injured Wednesday night after unidentified armed men stormed a police station in northern Somalia.
Despite clan clashes and territorial disputes between Puntland and Somaliland states, attacks of Al-Shabab which wants to depose Somali government have never been reported in Sool region.
The attack which took place wee hours of the night targeted a police station in Las-Anod town, prompting brief gin battle.
According to residents who spoke to Halbeeg News, three people including a civilian were killed in the attack.
“We heard a sudden loud explosion followed by specific gunfire which lasted for minutes. Astray bullets killed people in the area,” said a resident who sought anonymity.
The collapse of the Somali Republic in 1991 resulted in the declaration of Puntland State and self-declared Somaliland administrations laying claim to the Sanaag and Sool regions.
The self-declared Somaliland claims of ownership is based on the colonial boundary before Northern and Southern regions merged to form Somalia.
On the other hand, Puntland state claims the ownership of Sool and Sanag regions saying it administration signed clans residing the regions.
More than 10 years of periodic conflict between Puntland and Somaliland over the disputed Sool region had claimed dozens of lives.
In May over 20 people from both sides died in clashes between the two sides over the ownership of Tukaraq village, seized by Somaliland in March.
Somaliland operates as an independent state but has not won international recognition.
