NAIROBI (Halbeeg)- At least three Kenyan police officers have been injured after Al-Shabab fighters stormed police station near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Al-Shabab has been carrying out deadly attacks against Kenyan forces in Kenya and Somalia since 2011 when the East African nation sent its troops to Somalia.
Dozens of heavily armed Al-Shabab fighters destroyed a Safaricom Communication mast in Hamey town in Garissa country before attacking a police patrol base.
According to according a reliable source who spoke to Halbeeg News, the police officers in the town engaged in fierce gun battle with Al-Shabab fighters.
“Police officers engaged them with a heavy firefight and got them overwhelmed,” the source who sought anonymity told Halbeeg News.
Al-Shabab fighters made away with a police Landcruiser and weapons.
“The militia injured 3 officers who were flown to KDF Dhobley base for medication and made away with a support weapon HK 21, an MV Reg no. GKA 288Z Toyota Landcruiser, both national and KPS service flags, VHF radio set, solar batteries and food rations,” he said.
FOILED ATTACK
The group has stepped its attacks inside Kenya and military bases since the month of Ramadan.
Tuesday’s attack comes on the heel of an attack on a police camp in Liboi border town in northeast Kenya.
Speaking to the media Garissa County Commissioner Joshua Chepchieng said about 20 heavily armed Al-Shabab believed to have crossed from neighbouring Somalia attempted to raid an Administration Police camp in Amey but were repulsed.
Chepchieng said the group chose to ambush the police officers at 2 a.m. local time but quick response from the officers who have been on high alert kept them at bay.
“We have information that the militants have been planning to attack the camp and other key installations along the border but have been on high alert,” Chepchieng told journalists in Garissa.
