NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Thousands of commuters in Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi were this morning forced to walk several kilometres to connect Public Service Vehicle (PSV) at various terminus away from the city.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has issued a ban on matatus (PSV) from the Central Business District (CBD) which took effect today.
The move by the City Hall is aimed at decongesting the capital.
Police and traffic marshals have started implementing the ban, forcing matatus to drop off passengers outside the CBD.
In a notice published in the dailies last week, Nairobi county government said it has established 11 termini while declaring null and void all others that had been previously allocated despite concerns that the new points lack enough capacity.
In the gazetted rules, all PSVs accessing the CBD from Jogoo and Lusaka Roads will drop passengers at Muthurwa terminus.
All matatus from Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Kiambu, Thika Road, Kipande Road and Limuru Road will pick and drop passengers at Fig Tree in Ngara while all high capacity buses from upcountry were stationed at Machakos Country bus next to Muthurwa market.
The PSV using Mombasa and Lang’ata Road dropped off passengers at Railways terminus.
Matatu operators have cried foul, adding that the eleven termini designated by the county cannot accommodate all vehicles.
The ban barring the public transport from accessing Nairobi central business district which was gazetted May 12, 2017 gazette notice was mid this year shelved after protests by operators.
