Farmers in Bardhere and Sakow towns of Gedo and Middle Jubba regions respectively are living in fear of starvation after thousands of acres of food crops under irrigation were destroyed by floods.
Several farms have been flooded after River Jubba burst its bank following heavy rains.
Ismail Amin Mohamed said the floods swept away seventy water motor Pumps of the farmers.
He noted that over 100 families have been affected by floods after River Jubba breached its banks.
“The floods splashed by the river had an effect on us. We have lost our motor pumps and many families have been displaced,” said Mohamed.
Mohamed called for urgent humanitarian support for the displaced families.
Mumin Ali Gees, another farmer said flooding has affected farmers in riverine areas who use to grow maize, cowpeas, onions, kales, tomatoes, watermelon, citrus fruits, pawpaw and bananas.
Gees pointed out that most of the houses have been submerged after heavy floods caused by torrential rains and the river.
“Our houses were submerged by the floods; we sought refuge from high ground. We have nothing,” he said.
For the last two weeks, 200,000 people were displaced by floods after Jubba and Shabelle Rivers breached their banks in South and Central Somalia
