MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Tanzania has imposed visa requirements on nationals travelling from Somalia.
In a statement, Tanzanian government said citizens from 29 countries across the globe including Somalia would require special clearance from the Tanzanian immigration department prior to issuance of visa.
The statement adviced the nationals from whose countries fall under the category not seek ticket until they secure the visa.
“These countries fall under the referral visa category. The applicants whose national fall under this category are advised to book flight tickets or make payments for any reservations in Tanzania before they approval for their visa,” reads a statement posted on the website of Tanzanian Immigration.
The directive urged the applicants of the referral Visa to apply for the visa at least two months before their date of travel.
A Nigerian blogger, Funmi Oyatogun who was among the victim of the directive had travelled to Tanzania but was denied visa-on-arrival arrangement after he arrived in Dar es Salaam.
In her twitter, the blogger said she was told that her country along with Somalia, Niger amongst others.
“I just spoke to the immigration authorities in Tanzania and confirmed that the visa on arrival policy no longer applies to Nigerians and a bunch of others (Mali, Niger, Yemen, Somalia, etc). Now, we have to apply in advance at the embassy of have a Tanzanian apply on our behalf,” she said.
Somali embassy in Tanzania has not yet commented on the issue.
The move comes barely a week after 17 Somali national returned home from Tanzania following months of confinement in detention centers.
The returnees who returned home on Wednesday were rounded up by Tanzanian authorities as they embarked on an unsuccessful journey to South Africa.
