NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – A Nairobi court has granted the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) the right to detain a banker as part of an inquiry into possible terrorism links.
ATPU has 14 days to investigate Zuena Nakhumicha Machabe for suspected terrorism facilitation and recruitment, according to Kahawa Law Court Magistrate Gideon Kiage.
Machabe is claimed to have been a prominent Kenyan banker before allegedly joining the terrorist ranks in 2021.
Her role was reportedly to guarantee that terrorists obtained travel documents and arranged their transit from Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia to Somalia.
The mother of three formerly worked for tier two banks until resigning in mid-2021 and allegedly joined a terrorist group associated with the Islamic State, Puntland, in Somalia as a logisticsian.
Machabe’s murky past has been tied to terrorist actions in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, according to the court. She is said to live a life similar to that of British-born ‘white widow’ Louise Lewthwaite.
Machabe was apprehended on July 27, 2023, at the Tanzania-Zambia border town of Tuduma. According to police, the 34-year-old mother from Nakuru county was apprehended while attempting to unlawfully cross the border with her three children.
