DOLOW (Halbeeg News) – Suspected al-Shabaab militants have abducted seven aid workers in Gedo region on Tuesday.
The gunmen kidnapped the five doctors and their two drivers in Gedweyn which is 30 kilometers outskirts of Dolow district near Kenyan border.
The aid workers who were on a mission to provide medical assistance were from the World Vision and Trocaire Non-Governmental Humanitarian organizations respectively.
According to locals, the gunmen drove towards remote areas in Gedo controlled by the armed group al-Shabaab.
Government officials in the area said the aid workers initially traveled from Luuq district before they met their fate in Gedweyn.
No media comment from both the World Vision and Trocaire on the abductions of their staff so far.
Al-Shabaab has previously abducted international aid workers operating inside Somalia.
On June 2012, four aid workers in Kenya that hailed from Norway, Canada, Pakistan, and the Philippines were kidnapped from Dadaab refugee camp by al-Shabaab militants.
