Heads of Troops Contributing Countries (TCC) to AMISOM and Somalia have on Friday convened in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala.
The meeting attended by the leaders from Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia is expected review the progresses achieved by the mission and obstacles it faced.
Ugandan president, Yuweri Museveni who is hosting the Summit is officiating the meeting which is a follow-up to the TTC’s last year meeting held in New York.
The leaders will also be discuss in detail means of transferring the security responsibilities to Somali National Forces.
The summit follows the meeting of foreign and defense ministers of troops contributing countries which were concluded in Kampala on Thursday.
The minister’s summit which was attended by ministers from five countries has commended the AMISOM and Somali troops for their commitment to flush out Al-shabab fighters from Somalia.
Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Devid Muhoozi who chaired the meeting said AMISOM and Somali forces have liberated 80% the areas formerly controlled by Al-Shabab fighters.
“The troops of Somalia and AMISOM have defeated Al-shabab in many battles which led Al-shabaab flee from many towns and villages. Now forces control over 80% areas in South and central of the country,” Muhoozi told the delegates.
The meeting called on the UN, European Union (EU), United States and other international donors to support AMISOM and Somalia in the fight against Al-shabab.
African Union has deployed over 22000 strong force to help Somali government defeat its opponents.
