KHARTOUM (Halbeeg News) – Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir has resigned following months of deadly protests against his government.
Bashir has reportedly handed over to the country’s supreme military council controlled by the armed forces.
The 75-year-old who has been ruling the country for the last 30 years has recently been trying to overcome escalating protests across the country.
The country’s military announced on Thursday the formation of a transitional council after the resignation of Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, according to Al-Arabiya TV.
The Sudanese Professionals Association, which has spearheaded the protests, said they will only accept the handover of power to a transitional civilian government.
The Sudanese opposition party said they reject any changes that don’t meet the demands of the public, also adding how the Sudanese youth have the power to affect change in the country.
Protesters gathered in front of the military headquarters as military vehicles were deployed on key roads and bridges in Khartoum.
They were reportedly shouting “It has fallen, we won,” Reuters said.
Additional details of Mr Al-Bashir’s ouster were still sketchy.
