NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Strong southerly winds are expected to hit the Kenyan coastal areas later today, Meteorological department warned.
In a statement, the winds may become even stronger on Monday with speeds of up to 25 m/s experienced during the whole day.
“The strong winds of 25 m/s and high waves of more than 3 meters are projected to continue to Tuesday, July 23. The strong winds are likely to reduce to 20 m/s on July 24. While the wave heights may reduce to 2 meters the same day,” Met said in a statement.
The meteorological department warns that the strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages.
For those nearer the ocean, the winds are likely to lower visibility, cause boats to capsize and threaten the safety of those engaging in water sports and recreational activities.
“Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages. Very high waves may lower visibility, cause capsizing of boats and threaten the safety of those engaging in water sports and recreational activities,” the statement reads in part.
The areas on high alert include Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta and Tana River.
Other counties that will be affected by the strong winds include Turkana, Marsabit Mandera, Wajir Isiolo, Meru, Embu, Garissa, and Kitui.
The alert comes barely months after thousands of people died in Cyclone Idai which swept through the coastal areas of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.
