Somali Lower House Speaker, Mohamed Osman Jawari has dismissed rumours claiming he was resigning from office just hours after presidential intervention called off a scheduled house debate on a motion against him.
Statement issued on Saturday night, Jawari refuted and termed as unfounded his resignation report circulating on Social Media.
“We came know about false information regarding the resignation of the speaker of the house of the people, Mohamed Osman Jawari. The office of the speaker refutes those unfounded reports and urges the public to keep away from the rumours that confuse the public,” the statement reads.
In past 24 hours, there had been flying statements claiming the speaker has stepped down following consultations with aides.
The statement was issued an hour after 193 lawmakers appended their signatures to the motion against the Speaker in a bid to relieve Jawari from his duties.
The MPs accused the speaker of violating the country’s Provisional Constitution and the house Standing Orders.
If proponents of the impeachment motion against him secured the requisite quorum which is 184 of the 275 members of the house, the speaker would be ousted, according to the Provisional Constitution.
“The Speaker and his or her deputies shall be elected through a secret ballot by a minority of the Members of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament, and may be removed by a two thirds of the Members of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament,” articulates section 4 of the article of the constitution.
Saturday’s Lower House session planned to impeach jawari was cancelled after President, Mohamed Abdullahi intervened on Saturday.
The President held talks with the Speaker and his two deputies on the looming political tensions.
