MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The President of the Southwest regional state of Somalia, Abdulaziz Hassan Mohamed Lafta Gareen met officials from the office of the United Nations Mission for Somalia (UNSOM) on Thursday.
The UN officials led by the head of UNSOM office in Baidoa, Aroud Laloum had discussions on wide range issues including security.
The main purpose of the meeting was to enhance the working relations between the UN office and the administration of southwest state.
The new leader of Southwest said that the two sides discussed how to boost the ongoing reconciliation efforts in the region spearheaded by his administration with support from from the federal government during the visit of president Farmajo last week.
The UN officials also agreed to support southwest administration efforts to flush out Alshabab out of the areas still under their control in the state.
The meeting of UNSOM officials and regional state leaders is first of its kind since the federal government in Mogadishu kicked out UN envoy in the country, Nicholas Haysom through persona non grata.
The government accused the South African diplomat of interfering in the internal affairs of the government after demanding answers on violent clashes that followed after the arrest of Mukhtar Robow who was running for regional office in December presidential elections.
