MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Southwest state has announced its two first female senators to join the 11th Parliament of Somalia ahead of the country’s presidential election which is slated for 10 October.
According to the electoral commission, Zamzam Ibrahim Ali won first after defeating Sharifo Haji Osman, 81 to 4 votes in an early race on Monday morning. Seven votes were invalid.
Ms. Ali also served last parliament.
The regional lawmakers of southwest state have also elected Ayan Adam Abdullahi as the second senator from the state.
Senator elect, Abdullahi got 79 votes while her only opponent Farhiyo Nuur Adan got 8 votes. Five votes were spoiled.
The new senator-elect was born in Luuq Ganaane district, Gedo region in 1991 and schooled in Baidoa before proceeding to Bangladesh where she got a degree in computer engineering.

The elected senators include Mr Ilyas Bedel Gabbose, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, Abirizak Mohamed Osman and Hassan Iman Iftin.
The only female candidate vying for senate assembly in Jubbland state failed to secure the post.
The Senators are normally chosen by elected representatives in the local legislatures of every state.
Jubbaland, Galmudug, South West and Hirshabelle state are allocated 8 seats in the Somalia Federal Upper House.
