BAIDOA ( Halbeeg News) – The council of elders in the Southwest state of Somalia has backed a move by the regional leader, Abdiaziz Hassan Lafta-Gareen to cut the number of the assembly members.
Following a meeting in Baidoa, the interim administrative capital on Wednesday, the elders supported the proposal by Southwest president that called for the reduction of the number of the lawmakers in the current regional assembly from 145 to 95.
The spokesman of the council of elders, Malaq Derow Yakub who briefed the media after the meeting also underlined that the elders are making efforts to facilitate the process of selecting the second parliament of state.
“We have agreed to reduce the number of MPs to 95 as suggested by the leaders of the state.” Malaq Derow said.
“We discussed in detail the process of selecting the second parliament of the Southwest state,” Derow added.
The mandate of the current Southwest regional assembly expires in December 2019.
The regional lawmakers have already embarked on seeking confidence from electorates representatives for the second term in office.
