BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – Authorities of Southwest State have directed the security agencies to scale up operations to secure the administrative capital of the country, Baidoa, ahead of the presidential election.
Violent protests which began on Saturday in the state over the arrest of the former deputy leader of al Shabaab, Mukhtar Robow, have claimed lives of over ten people.
In a statement, Southwest State Electoral Committee instructed the forces to ensure that the stability is restored.
“The security agencies in Southwest State, especially in Baidoa town including the police, and military forces are directed to take responsibility to enhance security and stability in town with a vigilant eye,” the statement reads in part.
The statement has called on the public to work with the security agencies.
“We urge the people of Southwest State to preserve stability and peace and collaborate with the security forces in Baidoa town,” the committee said.
The committee also extended condolences to the families and friends of regional MP Abdishakir Yaqub Ibrahim who headed the regional Parliament sub-committee on security, who was killed in a mysterious shooting that is yet to be confirmed who is behind it.
According to the statement, the committee reiterated that election will be held on 19th December 2018 as per its schedule.
