BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – The regional electoral Committee of South West state has delayed the State’s presidential elections until next month.
In a statement on Thursday, the committee said the electoral commission delayed the presidential elections to the first week of December.
“The presidential election of Southwest state will take place on 5th of December this year,” the statement reads in part.
The statement also indicates that the members of the electoral will be trained from 27-29 of this month
It is the second time the election of the state has been postponed which was initially slated for mid this month.
Last week, the committee postponed the election from 17th Nov to 28th after the former regional committee resigned over what they termed as a blatant interference of the electoral process by the federal government.
United Nation had last week pledged that it will offer conduct capacity building workshop for the members of Southwest Electoral Committee to facilitating the upcoming presidential poll in the regional state so as to strengthen their duties and responsibilities.
In a meeting with South West acting president who is also the speaker of the regional assembly, Abdikadir Sharif Shekhuna, Deputy head of United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), Rai Zenenga said UN will dispatch election observers to monitor the election.
The state’s former president Sharif Hassan resigned on Nov. 7 and withdrew from the upcoming election, citing widespread interference in the poll.
Major contenders for the presidential election include former finance minister Mohamed Aden Fargeti and Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, a co-founder of the al-Shabab. Robow has since abandoned the terror group.
