Southwest State authorities have suspended the importation of new auto-rickshaws, aiming at downsizing the number of the tri-cycle vehicle in Baidoa town.
Authorities said the auto-rickshaws business got saturated as hundreds of the motorbikes have been imported in recent years.
Speaking to the media in Baidoa on Friday, Baidoa Police commissioner, Mahad Abdirahman announced the suspension saying Southwest state will no longer allow auto-rickshaws to be imported.
Abdirahman said the decision was taken after the authorities assessed the number of the motorcycles operating in Baidoa town and its environs.
The commissioner vowed that the administration will confiscate the Motorcycles popularity known as “Bajaj”.
“The suspension will come into effect on 4th May. We are hereby informing you that the authorities will seize any newly imported autorickshaw and the forces have already been directed to apprehend the violators of the directive,” said Abdirahman.
The number of autorickshaws in Mogadishu and the country’s major town has been increasing rapidly as the motorcycles gained popularity for their accessible and affordable.
This mode of vehicle is more commercially attractive to investors as it has a higher passenger and luggage capacity with the capability to travel in rough terrain.
