South West state has killed Al-shabab militants in a raid at their bases in the outskirts of Burhakaba town in bay region on Thursday, officials confirm.
Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, information minister of South West state, Ugas Hassan Abdi confirmed that South West state forces backed by Somali National Army killed a number of Al-shabab fighters in an intensive operation conducted at Qeyda village located 20 kilometres outside Burhakaba town.
“South West state cabinet held its normal meeting in Baidoa, a number isuues of including security was discussed during the meeting. The cabinet listened reports from the security minister of the state, the minister stated that many Al-shabab militants were killed in a security operation conducted by the government forces in a village near Burhakaba” the minister said.
According to the minister the soldiers raided Al-shabab camp forcing them to flee and abandon the camp.
The minister declined to give the number of Al-shabab fighters killed during the raid by the joint forces in Bay region.
Al-Shabaab did not comment on the recent clashes between its fighters and South West state forces.
Somali forces have recently launched operations against Al-Shabab in several regions in Somalia.
In August, Federal and State leaders have agreed a joint counter-offensive against Al-shabab fighters in a bid to liberate the areas under their control and contain the planned attacks and assassinations of the group against government officials.
