JOHANNESBURG (Halbeeg News)-The government of South Africa has arrested several people in connection with attacks and looting of Somali shop in Vosloorus, south of Boksburg in Gauteng.
In a statement, South African police said the suspects were followed after they targeted and robbed shops belonging to Somali nationals.
Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela noted police could not confirm reports that a Somali national was also killed during the robbery blaming Twitter users for publishing unconfirmed reports.
“Some of the things which are tweeted are misleading. Some incidents happened in the area, but we can’t give a number of people that were killed because that needs to be a fact,” Makhubela said.
Makhubela says they are still searching for some of the suspects who perpetuated these robberies and is appealing to members of the public to assist.
There is a significant Somali business community in South Africa that settled in the country after the collapse of the central government of Somalia in the early 1990s.
Somalia was among the African countries that were at the forefront in pushing for the independence of South Africa from the white apartheid government.
