MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalis on social media platforms have furiously reacted to a video by Kenyan activists claiming the Jubbaland state of Somalia as part and parcel of Kenyan soil.
The video dubbed “Somalia colonizing Kenya using Mzungus” was posted on YouTube on Saturday by a group calling itself the 5th Estate.
The video which has over 35K views by the time of publishing this news article was created by a group which described itself as young African scholars from Fort Hall School of Government which is linked to controversial Kenyan political analyst, professor Mutahi Ngunyi.
“Our government should demand the return of Jubbaland to Kenya, and we say so because in 1924 Britain chopped off a slice of Kenya to Italians in Somalia.
”
“After independence, Somalia refused to recognize the 1924 border created by Anglo-Italian treaty.”
The 12 minutes’ video accuses Somali government and its people of provocation despite helping hand from Kenya for years on state building.
“From the people of Kenya to the government of Somalia with a copy to the government of Norway and Mzungus and colonizers of the sea” Started the video warning that Africa is not the Berlin of 1884 where European colonizers divided and partitioned Africa among themselves.
The activists believe that western countries led by the Norwegian government are using Somalia to divide the Indian ocean rich oil reserves from Kenya to Mogadishu advantage via the president of International Court of Justice, Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf who they said is a Somali national.
“The government of Somalia wants to steal part of our land through a court who is president is Somali citizen, that is not clever.”
“Not an inch more not an inch less.”
They said in six months Kenya will be landlocked because of Somalia a claim that cannot be substantiated.
Social Media Reactions
Somalis reacted via social media mainly on Twitter and Facebook.
They dismissed what they described as offensive and Somaliphobia.
“Its Somaliaphobia in most vicious and vitriolic form. Very petty of Mutahi and his colleagues to air this content.” Tweeted, Abdihakim Aynte, the pioneer of IriseHub.
Researcher and analyst, Rashid Abdi said, “there is no objective analysis on the video as far as the maritime dispute between the two neighboring states is concerned.”
“Mutahi Ngunyi’s video post on Kenya’s maritime dispute with Somalia is offensive even for someone like me who believes a negotiated settlement would have been the best option, ” he tweeted.
On his part, Farah Maalim, Kenyan politician and former deputy speaker of parliament, exchanged tweet with Foreign Minister, ambassador Monica Juma following his reaction on the video.
“Nairobi is now a beehive of UAE intelligence activities/offensive on the unity and stability of Somalia. The maritime dispute at ICJ notwithstanding Kenya must shun UAE goodies and refuse to be drawn into a cold war with Somalia. The territorial integrity of all States in HOA is sacrosanct.”
Minister Juma responded “Strange claim here! In spite of the unfortunate circumstances that have befallen several of our neighbors over time (not just Somalia) Kenya has never had an appetite and acted in any way to offend or subvert the unity and stability of any of our neighbors.”
