Hargeisa (Halbeeg News) – Somaliland’s lawmakers elected Yassin Hajji Faratoon as their new speaker on Sunday. Over 81 parliamentarians took part in the election.
Yassin Hajji Faratoon won with 46 votes after defeating lawmaker Mohamed Khadar Dahir, who received 35 votes. Meanwhile, Ali Hamud Jibril, another Member of Parliament among the candidates for the seat, withdrew over lack of support.
In 2021, Prof. Faratoon ran for this seat; nevertheless, the immediate former Speaker, Abdirisaaq Khalif Ahmed, won.
Faratoon will replace Ahmed who resigned last month over Lasanod conflict. Somalia.
Yassin Hajji Faratoon, who was born in 1947 in the contentious city of Las Anod, finished his elementary education there before attending Dayaha High School in Erigabo.
Ahmed quit his position as Speaker and joined the SCC-Khatumo administration in June, accusing Somaliland forces of shelling of his constituency Las Anod. However, Ahmed was charged with undermining the legitimacy of the self-declared republic by the Somaliland by attorney general’s office.
The self-declared Republic of Somaliland announced independence from the rest of Somalia on May 18, 1991.
The crucial event occurred at Burao town, about160 km east of Hargeisa, the capital, following a reconciliation conference where representatives of multiple clans converged just five months after the fall of the regime of General Mohamed Siad Barre in Mogadishu in January 1991.
The self-rule was announced by the Somali Nation Movement (SNM), a guerrilla group that fought Mr Barre’s military in the former British Somaliland Protectorate. The rebel’s chairman Abdurahman Ahmed Ali alias Abdurahman Tour became the breakaway republic’s first leader for two years on an interim capacity.
Since then, the region had held several presidential elections that saw Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, Dahir Rayale Kahin and Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo rise to power. Somaliland’s current President is Muse Bihi Abdi.
